HDMI and HDCP - Some background information

As I explore older HDMI LCD/LED/Plasma TVs, HDMI projectors, game recording (PS3), taking screenshots for documentation and/or articles, and working on my own project to generate ambient light behind my TV, I've come across some interesting issues. Please keep in mind that this article is not intended to promote pirating content; instead, it aims to provide a solution for using non-HDCP compliant equipment with devices that require HDCP.

One of the downsides of my project is that it only works on dedicated HTPC systems running Kodi (XBMC). What if I wanted to see this ambient lighting effect with video from my Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, or Blu-ray player, or cable box? Besides dealing with technical complications when grabbing video, we'll also encounter a copy protection issue called HDCP, a feature that wasn't widely requested.

I've been experimenting with ambient light for my TV for some time now, as you can see in the 'Ambient TV lighting with XBMC Boblight, OpenElec and WS2811/WS2812 LEDs' article. The goal is to make colorful lights (LEDs) match the video displayed on your TV. With this technology, I hope to overcome the challenges posed by HDCP and enjoy a unique viewing experience.

I installed the new version of Monkey's Audio 10.21 on my Mac to see if it would improve my audio quality while watching movies. So far, the results have been promising, with crisp and clear sound that complements the visuals nicely. I'm excited to continue experimenting with this technology and exploring its potential applications.
